How's Fishing?

The big news? It's not going to be freezing cold this weekend.  After all the cold weather we have been dealing with, temperatures that are in the low 60's will feel like it's time to break out the shorts and sandals.  This last weekend has been bitter for most of us.  Mother Nature just threw a little surprise winter on top of our spring.  The coming weekend should be a welcome relief for all of us, even if thereis a chance of rain.
The stream is up a little bit - four to six inches - depending on where you are. The water is blue/green but not too muddy.  It is still running a little fast.
Even though there are showers predicted off and on for the week, it's not enough to cause any real problems for the stream.  Sounds like it's time to go fishing.

Who's Fishing
Congratulations to Jake Pethan.  He proposed to the lovely Courtney Bennett (her little brother likes to say "yea, we own the place. Welcome to our park!) by the waterfall at Bennett Spring and she said "yes!".  They are planning a September wedding.  Our best wishes to a really nice couple.

How's Fishing?

It's a typical spring week at the Spring.  If you hate crowds, this is your time.  Anglers are catching fish, but they are the ones who remember what their grandpa taught them:  "Fish deep or fish where you would stand, and don't tuck your poncho into your waders!" I got you all to smile, now didn't I?

Memorial
This is an e-mail I received during the winter season from Darrell Nichols.  I thought you might like reading it as much as I did.
He writes:

I was just looking at your fishing report as I am planning a traditional trip that my dad and I always took.  I saw your reminder about sending the names of the passed away  since the end of last years season.  I want to share a story how Bennett Springs has become such a special place for me and my family.

Growing up as a young kid my dad and I would ride his motorcycle to Bennett to go camping and never fished for trout.  Nine years ago my dad started fly fishing around the lakes and ponds in Moberly, Mo the town in which he and my mother lived.  I live in Macon, MO this same year 2003 I started a family, my dad always being a man of wisdom and guidance knew the stress of starting a family and carrier kept trying to get me to start fly fishing with him.  I kept telling him I did not have time I was to busy getting ready for a new baby and working.

September 2003 our first child was born, my dad convinced me to go fly fishing and camping with him at Bennett Spring park the last weekend of October we did packed a tent and left our air mattress at home and bought a couple blow up water rafts to sleep on.  During our weekend stay we went to a tackle store up the rode called "Weavers".  Jerry helped us get a leader tied on and setup us up with waders and away we went.  Few hours later and one water dip later my dad somehow caught a fish.  Bennett Spring was from then on our favorite place to go visit and fish.  Since the first trip we would always look at your Website and visit about the pictures and hot flies.  Weavers has been the place where we go to buy our tackle and waders for our family.  Weavers helped my children pick out their hip waders and gave my oldest daughter a safe wadding lesson.

Last year my dad asked me to go on our annual fishing trip to Bennett which we just always took as a father son trip, and I had to many other obligations.  This was the first year we did not go on our annual trip together so my mom and dad went.  On November 3, 2011 my dad called me on the phone to tell me about some new vintage motorcycle project.  In our phone conversation he said I wish you could have been at Bennett this weekend it was Beautiful.  I said next year maybe.  Three hours later my mom called and said the hospital had called and my dad had been rushed to the ER.  Less then 24 hours later November 4th, 2011 he was gone.

Bennett Spring has become a great place for my family and I to go and spend time together.  Since the first fishing trip my dad and I took our father so weekend to Bennett Springs we have became friends with so many great people like Mike and Donna Ross Bennett Springs residents.  My children have developed great friendships and memories.

This coming weekend my brother in law will be carrying on our annual fishing trip that my dad and always took.  I would love for you to mention his name with the list of others who loved the Bennett Spring area and have passed away.  Bobby "BOB" Nichols March 17, 1946 November 4, 2011.

Thank you,
Darrell Nichols

fishing report 3-15-13

Trout Fishing Report for Bennett Spring
March 13, 2013

How's Fishing
Today is just crazy beautiful!  No wind, sunny and 80 degrees.  Our
first taste of those beautiful days to come.
The water is still running fast, but not as high as it has some years.
You may need to fish a bit deeper than you normally would.  I have
been told that about three feet is typical at this time.  Fishing is
fairly good for most, and really good for others.
Don't forget the importance of new line on your reels.  It can be very
disappointing to lose a fish with a little fight in him because your
line has degraded over the winter .. At this point most people have
switched to the four pound weight line ( 6x for the fly rod).
For those of you who have kids with a Spring Break this week, the
weather looks good with only a chance of showers and temperatures in
the 50's.  It should be a great time to create some memories.
There is a group called the Fly Tyers Forum that is going to meet at
Weaver's Tackle store at 7pm every Tuesday starting April 2nd.  It's
an informal group, no fees or commitment, that are getting together to
talk about fishing and fly tying.  Drop-ins are welcome, but there is
a sign up sheet if you want to know what the topics will be for a
given meeting.  You can call our store for more information and Rick
will have posts on facebook as well.
